BOYNTON BEACH CAMERA CLUB
2010 COMPETITION RULES

BBCC MONTHLY COMPETITION PROGRAM AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY: The Boynton Beach Camera Club monthly image competition is open to all BBCC Competition Members in good standing. Held from January through June and from September through December annually, the competition is usually scheduled on the first Monday meeting of each month. Competition Members may show up to three (3) digital/print images (two images in Color and one image in Monochrome) in the skill classes in which they participate.

Non-competing members, who have not previously competed and desire to compete on a regular basis must submit a portfolio of three images to a member of the Competition Committee via email, or print, for review and assignment of competition group classification. In all cases, Competition Member status is based on vacancies available within the total competition membership group and is assigned on a first-come basis as requested.

IMAGE RESUBMISSION: Each BBCC member may show an individual image up to a maximum of three times, unless it receives a score of “27” or it is selected as Image Of The Month (IOM) or Print Of The Month (POM). Images that have received a top score of “27” and/or IOM/POM designation are only eligible to be in competition one more time during the END OF YEAR COMPETITION. Following that, the member MUST retire all images that have received a "27" or images which have been shown a maximum of three times from further BBCC Competitions.

IMAGE OF THE MONTH COMPETITIONS: All BBCC members who participate in a select competition group are eligible for the IMAGE OF THE MONTH/PRINT OF THE MONTH (IOM/POM) award in that group. This award is limited to one (1) per exhibited group per month and is based on a score of “27” as awarded/selected by the judge in the final round. Scores of “26 or less” are not eligible for IOM/POM.

Images should not be portrayals of “someone else’s art” (for instance, a painting, statue, or street art); these will be disqualified if the photographer has not made significant creative adjustments to the art. Disqualification will be at the discretion of the Competition Chairperson.

Submission of entries implies the acceptance of all conditions. The entrant must be the owner of all rights of the submitted works. Entry is not limited to images created and/or modified digitally and images may also be acquired and/or modified traditionally and then scanned. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his own and permits the BBCC to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for posting on the Club’s official internet website (www.bbccimages.com).

COMPETITION GROUPS: COLOR COMPETITION GROUPS: There are four (4) groups of color digital and print competitions: “MASTERS,” “SALON,” “A,” or “B.”

MONOCHROME/B&W COMPETITION GROUPS: (Note: Monochrome is defined as one color plus white only.) There are two groups of Monochrome digital and print competitions “MASTERS/SALON” and “GENERAL (A/B).” Each competition member may submit one Monochrome image per month in an Open Subject Category in their assigned skill group (“MASTERS/SALON” or “GENERAL”).

Competition Members may exhibit in digital or print divisions at their own discretion; however, all entries for the same month must be in one competition venue only.

Those members of a competition group who have competed at or near the top of their group will be considered for advancement to the next competition group annually in December of each year. A member who has participated in most of the competitions during a calendar year (January to December) and maintains a high average score may also be considered for advancement. Advancement from each group can occur at the end of one year with the exception of entrance into the “Masters” group, which requires a minimum of two years of excellence in the Salon group, and approval by the BBCC Executive Committee.

COMPETITION ENTRY MAKE-UPS: Members are normally permitted one make-up per year (a maximum of two color images and one monochrome image), which must be submitted the month following the member’s absence. We limit the number of make-ups due to the ease with which members may submit ahead of time if they will be out of town, either by entering in advance digitally or by leaving prints with a friend to bring to the competition. Additionally, if a member (or the member’s family) should suffer a severe hardship, make-ups shall be granted accordingly by the Executive Committee. There are some other circumstances (such as when and if a club member acts as a competition judge for BBCC) when a member or member’s partner may be allowed make-ups.

SUBMITTING ELECTRONIC IMAGE FILES: All images for digital competition must be uploaded as Electronic files only and must be in jpeg format. A maximum of two color images and one monochrome image per group, unless marked as a “make-up,” may be submitted.

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION: Please click on http://www.psaexhibition.com/boynton/boynton-beach-1-data-collection.php and follow instructions.

PRINT SUBMISSION: Prints MUST BE matted or mounted (tape or stickiness not to be exposed) and shall be no larger than a 16x20 mat size or smaller than 8x10 (mounted).

A maximum of two color prints and one monochrome print per group, unless marked as a “make-up,” may be submitted. All prints must be labeled on the reverse side with the maker’s information to include their personal print competition code. Print exhibitors are requested to arrive no later than 6:30 p.m. in order that competition entries can be reviewed for proper coding and sorting. BBCC labels are made available at each competition.

JUDGING: All digital images entered into monthly competition will be digitally projected on a screen with an electronic projector at a resolution of 1024x768 set to 16.7 million colors. The projector will be tuned via a color adjustment tool prior to the meeting and will be adjusted continuously according to ambient light, etc. Competition judges and/or members are not authorized to make any changes to the projector settings. All images submitted must have the Color Setting preference sRGB in order to maintain competition integrity. Judges will score utilizing the BBCC 27-point system. Each image score award will range from a minimum of 21 to a maximum of 27 points each. Scores will be computer-recorded following the judge’s decision and will be announced as recorded.

All print images entered into monthly competition will be displayed at a minimum of six feet from the judge’s viewing position under the best optimum lighting conditions available during the competition. Judges will score utilizing the BBCC 27-point system. Each image score award will range from a minimum of 21 to a maximum of 27 points each. Scores will be manually recorded following the judge’s decision and will be announced as recorded.

DIGITAL PRESENTATION STANDARDS - ENTRY FILE DIMENSIONS AND SIZE: The required maximum horizontal dimension is 1024 pixels and the maximum vertical dimension is 768 pixels. Smaller images are acceptable. If the images do not meet the file criteria, the website will reject those images, and the maker must resubmit. Makers may not substitute the images once they have been submitted. Images submitted to an incorrect class will be disqualified.

PREPARING THE IMAGES WITH STANDARDIZED SIZING FOR PROJECTION WITH A DIGITAL PROJECTOR: Prior to opening images that you will be submitting for monthly competition you must change your color settings within your digital program (Photoshop Elements, 7.0, CS series and any other program you may be utilizing).

When the program (Photoshop) is open, select EDIT>COLOR SETTINGS. Next select WORKING SPACE and scroll until you find sRGB. Select sRGB and make sure that PRESERVE PROFILE MISMATCHES is selected under Color Management Policies and ASK WHEN OPENING is checked. This set-up allows you to keep your original color profile but to selectively switch it to the sRGB working space so that all images in competition will be of the same value.

Once the above procedure is completed, click OK. Note that this will stay in memory and only needs to be accomplished once. Open image and a window may open indicating a color file mismatch. Select CONVERT DOCUMENT COLORS TO WORKING SPACE and click OK. Duplicate the images and close out the original file; if asked to save select NO to retain color profile of the original image.

When sizing an image for competition, follow these steps:

1. Using the duplicate image only, Left Click on the word “image” in the menu bar and then Left Click on “image size” in the drop down menu.
2. Be certain there are check marks in the “constrain proportions” and “resample image” boxes in the Image Size Window.

FIRST - Change the resolution to 72 pixels/inch.

For horizontal images size dimension to a maximum of 1024 pixels.

For vertical images size to a maximum of 768 pixels.

If either dimension size exceeds the above maximums you must lower the value to conform to the limit.

If your image is sized below the maximum in either horizontal or vertical, it will not be shown to its best advantage.

Next, Left Click on the word FILE in the menu bar and then click SAVE AS FOR WEB & DEVICES. Choose your location for the “save” box. (A desktop folder marked as BBCC is a convenient place.) Give your images titles and proceed to the Calendar page on the BBCC website and click on the link to upload your images.
